Hancock Gourmet Lobster Up for Three National Awards

Innovative Maine lobster value-added company nominated for 12th time

Cundy's Harbor, ME – April 19, 2011 – Hancock Gourmet Lobster Co. has been named as a finalist for three of the specialty food industry's most prestigious awards, which will be given out in July. The awards are considered the "Oscars" of the food industry.

The accolades, called sofiTM Awards (Specialty Outstanding Food Innovation), are awarded annually by the National Association of the Specialty Food Trade at its International Fancy Food Show. Hancock Gourmet's Pemaquid Point Lobster Pot Pies, Orr's Island Oyster Stew and the Lobster Risotto on the Half Shell were selected by a national panel of specialty food buyers as finalists from a field of more than 1650 entries. "We are thrilled to be nominated again for this very prestigious award," said founder and president Cal Hancock. "We make great products and this is a testament to that." Hancock has been creating value-added Maine lobster products for over 11 years.

The Pemaquid Point Lobster Pot Pie was nominated in the "Outstanding Frozen Savory" category. The Pemaquid Point Lobster Pot Pies are made with Maine lobster in a sherry cream sauce and topped with flaky puff pastry. They are prepared in a ceramic ramekin for easy bake and serve. The product was previously awarded a sofiTM Gold Award in 2003 in the "Outstanding Meat, Pate or Seafood" category. The Orr's Island Oyster Stew has been nominated as a finalist in the "Outstanding Soup, Stew, Bean or Chili" category. Hancock Gourmet's Orr's Island Oyster Stew is a traditional one made with whole plump oysters, cream, milk, butter, celery, onion and subtle spices, all combined to showcase the look, taste and texture of the oysters. The Lobster Risotto on the Half Shell was nominated as a finalist in the "Outstanding Perishable Foodservice Product" category. It combines sweet, heavenly Maine lobster with a delicate, rich beurre blanc sauce mixed with Arborio rice to form a delicious appetizer or entrée. These are handmade, beautifully presented and perfectly pre-portioned in real scallop shells. This product is available for retail as well as foodservice. "We really do focus on quality," said Hancock. "As we like to say 'Welcome to Maine…the way food should be.'"

Judges consider quality, taste, innovativeness, ingredients, merchandisability, and best in class when determining finalists. The specialty food industry each year turns to the results of this competition to discover emerging trends, as well as the highest-quality, most innovative products.

Hancock Gourmet has been nominated for the awards numerous times in its 11-year history, taking home Gold Awards for Pemaquid Point Lobster Pot Pies (2003); Cundy's Harbor Lobster Stew (2007), Port Clyde Lobster Mac & Cheese (2008 and 2010), Spruce Head Smoked Scallop Lobster Bisque (2008), and Linekin Bay Lobster Corn Chowder (2010) . The company was previous a finalist for its Nubble Light Lobster Wellington (2005); for Best Product Line (2008). Category winners from this year's 31 sofiTM categories will be announced in Washington, DC on July 11.
