The whoopie pie is so popular in New England that the Yankee Magazine once humorously fashioned a "New England Food Pyramid" including whoopie pies in their "major food groups" category. It's a chocolate cookie cake with creamy vanilla filling in the middle. It's been suggested that they originated with a cook who had some leftover cake batter and dropped it on a cookie sheet into generous cookie-sized rounds. The success of this experiment supposedly elicited the exclamation: "Whoopie! Pies!"
