On the New Meadows River south of Brunswick, Cundy's Harbor is the very picture of a Maine fishing village, all spruce trees, neat old homes, and clean green water. It looks today the way Ogunquit might have looked back in 1946 before the great postwar flood of tourists, when Hazel Hancock opened up the Ogunquit Lobster Pound Restaurant and started serving lobster to visitors. Her granddaughter, Cal, is continuing the family tradition today in Cundy's Harbor.
She sells about a dozen seafood delights by mail order at her website, making a variety of standard favorites available to those not lucky enough to live here in the winter. Cal Hancock's lobster pot pie has won awards, her Pemaquid Pot Pie was chosen as Outstanding in its category at the prestigious Fancy Food Show in New York.
Click over to www.hancockgourmetlobster.com and you can treat your holiday guests to fresh scallops, lobster salad, lobster stew, an offshore sampler, or, perhaps the most fun – lobster rolls. Hancock put together a nifty kit that includes fixings for six of these favorites, from a pound of meat to half-dozen New England rolls. She ships overnight Monday through Thursday, avoiding the need for using any preservatives or nasty stuff – everything is all natural. As the Maine course at a season party or as a gift, it's hard to beat fresh lobster rolls as the snow falls outside, a tasty reminder of the Down East Coast when people need it most.
Hancock also has a variety of gift packs – L.L. Bean totes with lobster stew and a special mug, that sort of thing – as well as chocolate lobsters for dessert.
