Maine Company Wins Double Gold

New York, July 2, 2008 – The National Association of Specialty Food Trade announced winners of the 36th annual sofi™ Awards for outstanding products of 2008 at its 54th Summer Fancy Food Show this week ("sofi" stands for specialty outstanding food innovation). Hancock Gourmet Lobster Co. won two gold medals presented by noted chef Jacques Pepin for their Spruce Head Smoked Scallop Lobster Bisque in the "Outstanding Soup, Stew, Bean or Chili" category and for their Port Clyde Lobster Mac & Cheese in the "Outstanding Pasta, Grain or Rice" category. The sofi awards, a coveted industry award, recognize excellence in specialty foods and beverages.
The Port Clyde Lobster Mac & Cheese "is nothing like your grandmother's" said company president Cal Hancock. "We want customers to be able to taste the big chunks of lobster so we have used a rich mascarpone cheese sauce with just a touch of cheddar". The topping is made with panko bread crumbs, butter, herbs and a touch of parmesan. "We were told by many at the show that this was the best thing they tasted."
The Spruce Head Smoked Scallop Lobster Bisque is a subtle blend of lobster and smoked bay scallops. "We wanted to make a bisque that was unique and have succeeded with this product – each spoonful is a perfect balance."
Products were judged by a panel of specialty food retailers, supermarket buyers, natural food merchants, chefs and culinary educators from around the country. Nearly 2500 specialty food items in 32 categories were judged during the competition. This year's Show represented the world with 72 countries exhibiting over 180,000 products.
Port Clyde Lobster Mac & Cheese is offered in two 9oz. casseroles for retail sale and is also available in foodservice packaging. Spruce Head Smoked Scallop Lobster Bisque is available for retail sale in a quart container and for foodservice in boilable bags. Hancock also won the gold in 2003 for their Pemaquid Point Lobster Pot Pies, in 2007 for their Cundy's Harbor Lobster Stew and was a finalist in 2005 for their Nubble Light Lobster Wellington.
Hancock Gourmet Lobster Co., based in Cundy's Harbor, Maine, sells specialty lobster products to gourmet retail stores, catalogs, and direct to consumers through its catalog and website, www.HancockGourmetLobster.com.
